“Hey, what are you doing?” said Snowy pleasantly.

Kita’s eyes opened and yawned. She’d fallen asleep at Sarin’s bedside. “Nothing. I was just wishing her well.”

Snowy smiled. “It’s ok, kitten. You’re allowed to check on her. It was a gruesome injury, but the nanites I made should speed her recovery.”

Kita looked at the bed, feeling bad she couldn’t be the one to heal Sarin. “Thanks, I owe you.”

Snowy wiggled her whiskers. “I can think of lots of ways for you to repay me…but not right now. I want you healthy—both mind and body.”

Kita frowned. Her head was still cloudy, but she couldn’t dwell on that. She had things that needed to be done. “Do you know anything about manufacturing and engineering?”

Snowy shook her head. “Only nanites and stuff for a lab.”

“No. I need to retool The Forges.”

“Oh,” said Snowy. “I’m not sure how to do that.”

“Then we’ll just have to find someone who can.” Kita accessed Roost’s brain scan databanks, searching for someone that could do what she wanted. Her search didn’t find anyone. “No one.”

“That’s odd,” said Snowy. “What did you search for?”

“Retool machine.”

Snowy laughed. “That might be too precise. Try industrial engineering or manufacturing specialist.”

Kita did. This time she came up with three names. She opened her hand and displayed the dossiers on the holoprojector. They flipped through them, but Kita didn’t understand what she was reading. “Does this make sense to you?”

Snowy grinned. “Most of it. Some of the more technical stuff is beyond me, but I think we should go with this guy, Ping Woo. He was a teacher who specialized in manufacturing and infrastructure in the twenty-fifth century. It says here he was responsible for the transformation of the Alaskan Rivera, Rio’s space industry, and Dallas’ downtown area. He has a statue in Hero’s Park in Fort Worth.”

“Are these places?”

“Yes. They’re all part of the United Earth Empire.”

“Let’s get him and see what he has to say. Omega, call up Mister Ping Woo, please.”

“Why don’t I just call up the entire library?”

“Because we only have so much computing power,” replied Snowy tersely.

“Watch it, fuzzy. I’ll put you back dirt side…the long way.”

“And I’ll send you after her,” said Kita.

“Someday, you won’t be there and POOF. Gone. One Chinese engineer coming up.”

A man appeared wearing a yellow bodysuit. His black hair was combed to the side, and he looked around curiously. “Honorable Commander Kita and plaything Snowy, I presume?”

Kita tapped her toe in annoyance. “Omega!”

“Fine, fine, fine. The truth hurts.”

Woo blinked. “Honorable Commander Kita and Snowy, I presume?”

“Hi,” said Kita. “Yes, I’m Commander Kita of the Legion of Yorq, and this is Commander Snowy. We need your help.”

“Anything I can do to help the Legion. I am most honored.”

“I have a tough job for you. I have some machinery that needs updating to make rifles and bullets.”

“What kind of machinery?”

“Primitive machinery. The rifles and bullets are also primitive, but we need a lot of them.”

Woo looked around at Roost. “I am sure a place such as this can make what you need.
